Our first deliverable for MCDM Multimedia Storytelling was a short, five-image slideshow that tells our story with a beginning, middle and end. I narrated my ACTION-IDEA (Aristotle's Poetics for Screenwriters by Michael Tierno) as my current story, told casually in 17 seconds.

"In the wake of hiring freezes and record unemployment, this recent northshore Chicago college graduate moved back in with mom and pop in the northwest. She tackles the causes of world poverty and injustice by day, and serves triple grande soy no foam skinny lattes by night."

Food Crisis Spurs Rate of Child Brides in Afghanistan

Humanitarian organization World Vision gives a face and voice to children on Universal Children's Day

Washington, D.C., November 20, 2008—Last year 57 percent of Afghan girls were married before the legal age of 16, a number that has been exacerbated today by a record drought and the global food crisis.

Afghanistan’s fiercest winter in 40 years killed 100,000 head of livestock last season. With grain prices skyrocketing, farmers have nothing to feed their livestock and families are selling daughters as young as seven to buy food and pay off their debts.

World Vision presented a new online video and audio presentation to spread awareness of early marriage and girls’ education in honor of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Featured is young Miriam who dreams of a day when girls can attend school instead of marrying in their childhood.

“Before She’s Ready: 15 Places Girls Marry by 15,” a new study by humanitarian organization World Vision, reports that child brides are expected to total 100 million within the next decade. Today 51 million girls in the developing world have been married before legal adulthood. Every day an estimated 3,500 girls worldwide will marry before reaching their fifteenth birthdays. Another 21,000 girls each day marry before the age of 18.

World Vision’s Work in Afghanistan

World Vision has supported the Herat Regional Hospital with donations of pharmaceuticals and medical supplies. Other local health programmes that support women include a centre for sexually transmitted infections and a programme training midwives for village practice, which teaches rural women the importance of regular check-ups during pregnancy and the benefits of later marriage.

Since 2004, 140 midwives have graduated from World Vision’s Midwifery Training Program and are at work throughout western Afghanistan. Another 68 students are now in training.

World Vision is a Christian relief and development organization dedicated to helping children and their communities worldwide reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty. We serve the world’s poor—regardless of a person’s religion, race, ethnicity, or gender.

Graduation Announcement Postcards. I skipped Jostens services. Instead I hung my roommates solid red blanket from our fireplace mantle and snapped a photo with my macbook webcam - not the best resolution, I know - and used the magic lasso tool. The back of the postcard was the invitation with room for a personal penned note.

Player Cards. The Chicago Eagles coaches gave their testimonies by distributing player cards. Children and players at Eagles camps and training sessions competed with each other to collect them all.

Travel Journal. The Chicago Eagles needed to compile sports ministry training literature, contact information, and maps into a handbook that the players and coaches could use during the summer academy. The document was printed and assembled at the Eagles office.

Tami Burke Photography Business Card. Tami and I played college soccer together. She was a barista at Newport Coffeehouse where her framed and matted black and white photography hung for sale on the walls. Customers frequently asked for her contact information, so Tami asked me for a solution. A day later this design filled a card-holder by the cash register.

Since we needed the cards instantly, and for cheap, we bought textured and perforated white cardstock at an office supply and I printed them in my bedroom on my ink-jet. There was no need to buy a new black cartridge because the design required very little ink.

All said and done: I spent $9, a few hours, and Tami took me to Big Bowl in Lincolnshire for dinner.

New York Mission Letter

New York Mission Letter. I designed and wrote my prayer, encouragement and financial support letter for a college mission trip I took in March 2008. Friends and family donated enough to cover all of my expenses. I also wrote an article about the trip for the Trinity Digest Students Serve Over Spring Break.

Trinity Soccer Tshirt Designs

Midnight Classic. The Trinity International University soccer program's biggest recruiting event is an indoor tournament - a champion is usually decided by 2 a.m. The design was one of six I mocked up for the event and was voted for by the current players and coaches.

Push Day. The TIU soccer program is committed to being the fittest in the league - a philosophy usually enforced when a team lacks talent. One practice each fall and spring is devoted strictly to intense fitness exercises. A t-shirt has been made to commemerate each event, and is worn by the players during the practice.

I designed push day 7 & 8. When trailing teammates in running drills, players read "Those who finish strong are the exceptions," and "Take my feet and let them be swift and beautiful for thee."
